Personal protection system from Linde Material Handling

Working safely in narrow aisles
A very narrow aisle truck lifts a pallet in a high-bay warehouse surrounded by racks of boxes

In narrow-aisle warehouses, maximum performance and height are required in confined spaces. This means every single transport process needs to meet the highest standards. Very narrow aisle trucks from Linde Material Handling rise to the challenge with ease, moving up to 40 pallets per hour. This is made possible thanks to the trucks’ capacity to lift loads and accelerate at the same time. These diagonal movements enable them to reach top speeds even at a height of several metres.

However, this dynamism does involve some particular risks: the operator’s view is often restricted and obstacles or people are easy to overlook. For this reason, the German standard DIN 15185-2 prescribes special protective measures for people in narrow aisles.

The solution is the personal protection system (PPS) from Linde Material Handling. The safety system reliably detects people in narrow aisles and intervenes directly in the operation of the industrial truck if necessary. This prevents accidents, guarantees legal certainty for warehouse operators and increases productivity when handling goods.

Stay safe with laser scanners

The personal protection system offers reliable protection thanks to state-of-the-art laser technology. The front and rear of the trucks are equipped with sophisticated laser scanners that permanently monitor the working environment in both directions. Infrared rays are used to detect people and objects within a radius of up to nine metres.

The multi-level safety concept of the personal protection system is based on a safety field and two warning zones that can be individually adapted to the situation in the warehouse. If the very narrow-aisle truck approaches a person, the PPS reduces the speed. If any people are detected in the safety field directly in front of the truck, the truck comes to a halt quickly and safely. This multi-stage safety architecture ensures particularly smooth braking. For additional safety, an acoustic signal can be activated for each warning zone.

Handle any situation with confidence

If the truck is brought to a standstill by a person within an aisle, simply press the release button. This allows you to continue your journey as soon as the person has moved out of the way. If the truck stops outside an aisle, the operator has two options for continuing the journey: they can either press the release button or give the signal to continue moving via the drive lever.

Safety – Always and everywhere

The personal protection system also ensures safety outside the rows of shelving – for example, when moving from aisle to aisle or in outdoor areas. If the safety system detects anyone in the travel path, it automatically reduces the speed of the truck or, if necessary, brings it to a halt. One of the two warning fields can be used for this and individually adjusted to the desired width and length.

The perfect combination

Providing maximum safety in narrow aisles, the personal protection system can be enhanced with additional safety solutions from Linde MH. For example, the Aisle safety assistant (ASA)is an ideal add-on. It automatically adapts the travel speed on uneven ground and restricts the lifting height if there are obstacles such as supporting beams in the travel path.

Advantages at a glance

Reliably detects people and objects

Stops automatically if there is a risk of collision

Smooth braking thanks to multi-level warning fields

Ensures safety even when traveling outside aisles

Option to continue moving in the event of obstacles

Can be combined with other safety systems

Further innovations and practical examples

Active Stability Control

Very narrow aisle trucks are used for working at great height. The aisles are narrow and the distances to the rack are calculated very precisely. Because of that, even the slightest unevenness in the warehouse floor can become a problem. Linde Material Handling’s Active Stability Control assistance system for the K truck provides an innovative solution.
